The airport administration said on Monday that all international and domestic flights to and from the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) will be delayed until midnight on Tuesday due to an incident involving a jet from Korean Air that overshot the runway.

According to the MCIA, the Airbus A330 aircraft is currently stranded on airport runway no. 04 after the Korean Air flight number KE631 from Seoul, South Korea overshot the runway while attempting to land during heavy rains late on Monday night.

The airplane is currently having its fuel extracted by the authorities, which is an essential step before it can be removed from the runway.

MCIA

Before the clock strikes midnight on October 25, the administration of MCIA is trying to open up sections of the runway in a phased opening. They intend to reduce the length of the runway closure from three kilometers down to 2.6 kilometers in order to make room for the entry of aircraft with a lower takeoff and landing weight.

According to MCIA Assistant General Manager Glenn Napuli, the Panglao International Airport in Bohol and the Dumaguete City airport in Negros Oriental have been recognized as alternative airports for flights destined for Cebu. Both of these airports are located in the Philippines.

However, in order to reach the province of Cebu, passengers will have to take ferry boats.

Napuli also mentioned that they are making efforts to facilitate the takeoff of at least six flights that are presently idling at the Cebu airport.

Although there are no obstacles on the runway that will be utilized for takeoff, the airport management must first receive approval from the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines.

In addition, Napuli said that eight of the 162 passengers had minor injuries, but all eleven members of the crew remained unharmed.

Because to the event, hundreds of passengers are currently waiting at the airport in Cebu, in the hopes that they would be able to board their planes soon.
